KEYNOTE - Interrogating Technology: Towards Constructive Tech Criticism
The worm has turned on Big Tech. Once media darlings of disruption and innovation, we are beginning to understand that technology is not neutral, that platforms wield power, and that culture and technology are inextricably entwined. We’ve articulated the problems, but what solutions do we have? This talk looks at where the techlash has landed us and equips us with critical questions to integrate the futures we are building. Constructive technology criticism that aims to bring stakeholders together in productive conversation rather than pitting them against each other, and poses alternative possibilities to ensure that we are building a humane, just, and inclusive future. Beyond intellectual arguments, constructive criticism is embodied, practical, and accessible, and it offers frameworks for living with technology.

Revolutionizing Data With XR
Until now, data has existed as dashboards, line graphs, pie charts, and scatter plots. But as the scale, complexity, and variety of modern datasets continues to grow exponentially, these traditional data visualization methods hit their limits and no long accurately communicate insights. XR (virtual and augmented reality) technologies offer a better way to explore datasets naturally and holistically, while decreasing the amount of time and effort needed to discover actionable insights. However - If data is no longer flat and no longer exists as charts and graphs - what does it look like? How will we interact with immersive ‘data environments’, and how will they increase the value of our data?

Strategies for Data-Driven Marketing
Today, data drives the marketing process from end-to-end: From data collection, analysis and activation for consumer insights and trend detection, to real-time adaptation of media strategies. But not all data-driven marketing is made equal, and simply increasing our extraction of consumer data is not enough. Instead, strategic approaches are vital for unlocking the full potential of data for different industry sectors, as well as for finding new ways to interface analytic tools and artificial intelligence with creative thinking. Workshop 2 - How to embrace AI and Machine Learning
The following workshop is about one startup founder’s journey towards embracing Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning as a differentiator in the industry. Weerada Sucharitkul, the CEO and Cofounder of FilmDoo, discusses her journey on developing FilmDoo and how innovative applications of AI enabled the company to repurpose their technology as an edutainment platform helping people to learn languages and explore culture through films.

Launched in 2015, the company initially focused on the content and entertainment industry. As the industry became more competitive, looking beyond the film and entertainment industries was key towards developing new proprietary technologies and innovation that allows FilmDoo to differentiate in the marketplace. Today, FilmDoo utilizes and draws upon synergies in AI and machine learning applications across the advertising, sports and education sectors.

After sharing her experience, Weerada will give a brief introduction into Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The workshop then ends by kicking off discussions with the audience on real-world applications of AI and Machine Learning across different industries.

This workshop is presented by Film University Babelsberg "Konrad Wolf" and receives funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the STARTS grant agreement N° LC-01207687.

eHealth: Imaging Procedures
Virtual Reality is making its way into our lives, and into saving our lives. The healthcare sector is filled with use different cases, from pain therapy or treating PTSD with VR to patient information and training experiences. Visualizing a tumor in the human body correctly can not only decide over life and death during an operation – it also helps people with cancer to understand the treatment they are about to undergo. This is why imaging procedures with multiple sources and display methods like Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality can be used for today’s most modern hybrid operation rooms. XR is also already in use for training aspiring as well as experienced surgeons to perform better at the same time in difficult operations. And XR as a three dimensional visualization technology will play its part in saving lifes in the future, when remote expert doctors support their colleagues in crucial situations with detailed instructions in real time. We talk with researchers about how XR will change diagnosis, operation and therapy in different medical fields. And see how it's already been used today.

Workshop 3 - Supercharge your Versioning with IMF
In an increasingly global market for great quality content, localisation is more important than ever. You can’t be a global player unless you’re a local player too. But how can you build a content supply chain that allows you to localise your content efficiently? How do you avoid spiralling costs as you distribute your content to more markets? And what’s the impact on the production process? The Interoperable Master Format - IMF - is a great tool for managing versioning and mastering more effectively. It can help you to build more efficient processes and reduce costs, yet it may seem daunting at first. That’s why the DPP has published a range of operational guidance to help you implement IMF. Join Rowan to learn what IMF is, and to understand its impacts on versioning, metadata, QC and distribution.

In cooperation with Digital Production Partnership (DPP).

Workshop 4 - Conversational AI: Learn how easy it is to put ideas into practice with advanced dialog management
Ever had an idea for an interesting Alexa skill? Or perhaps your own chatbot? This workshop is focused on how you can quickly and easily build prototypes for testing out your ideas, without having to wait for technical resources. Malte Kosub, Co-founder of Future of Voice and Parloa, a dialog management system, will help you get hands-on and bring your ideas to reality.

For decades, humans have sought to understand machines, and user interfaces have developed from printed-out results to sophisticated touch-screen displays. Now the tables have turned and we look to create machines that can fully understand humans. Learn how to take a rule-based approach to build a conversational flow, accounting for anything the user could say and creating a natural conversation for achieving various outcomes.

This interactive workshop begins with an introduction to dialog management and the rise of digital assistants such as Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant. Tilmann will share his thoughts and expertise, showing you why now is the time to begin crafting your own Conversational Strategy.

AI can be used to help create engaging experiences in the areas of Media, Customer Service, Commerce, Information Platforms, Internal Assistance, and much more. Malte will guide you by showing you how easy it is to build your first Voice application using Parloa, and in the second part of the workshop participants will be able to get to grips with the platform itself. At the end, you will be able to walk away having created your own voice application, and you’ll be armed with a host of ideas for how to take things further in your own day to day work. You’ll see that there’s an easy way into the world of Conversational AI, and that it’s really not that complicated after all.

Agile XR Project - From an Idea to a Product
The implementation of XR projects requires a process model that is specifically geared to the challenges of the design and implementation of 3D experiences and continuously adapts to new requirements and findings.
In this slot, the procedure for an XR project is considered from the idea through implementation to the finished product. The differences between conventional IT projects and XR projects are highlighted. The slot answers questions on how Design Thinking can be used to find ideas and why it makes sense to develop a product vision. Why is it good to add a storyboard to the backlog known from agile projects? Both form the basis for the common understanding of all participants. How do I break the project down into smaller subtasks and how does a Planning Poker support the continuous determination of the effort required for time planning?
The agile realization of these tasks in sprints places special demands not only on the developers, but also on designers and testers in XR development.

This session will be presented by team neusta / HEC.

XR in Architecture and Real Estate
Is it easier to sell a house or an apartment when the potential owners can experience a sunset in their fancy furnished new rooms in Virtual Reality? Can architects conveniently plan and evaluate projects with XR tools and then use the data for the diciding pitch? Is the technology only suitable for bigger teams and architecture firms that can provide enough hands to build APIs and custom made tool sets? And can these data then be further used, for example on the construction sites?
